Meet the Coordinator:
Ruth Cameron discovered belly dance in 2005 during a hiatus from decades of competitive endurance sports when she was looking for a low impact fitness alternative. Her love of music and creative movement and the camaraderie offered by local dance classes led to a longstanding commitment to practice and exploration of many types of bellydance- from Middle Eastern to tribal fusion, gothic fusion and most recently, Fat Chance Bellydance (FCBD) and its dialects. Ruth now focusses her dance studies exclusively on the FCBD (fusion) style that originated along the west coast of the USA.
With a passion for dance props - from zills to tambourine, baskets, swords and more, Ruth has a long-standing love of sword work, specifically the "FCBD Sacred Sword" dialect. She studies regularly with internationally renowned sword dance teachers from across the USA, Europe and Asia. Ruth’s background as a former student of classical guitar has fueled her love for Flamenco-FCBD fusion, and for the past years she has also studied the FCBD “Siren” dialect (Spanish fan and manton) with teachers based in Europe.
Whether performing at local events as a soloist or with a partner or a group, designing authentic dance costumes, writing choreography, or coaching dancers, Ruth continues to enjoy all that bellydance has to offer.
Her message to those sitting on the fence ... Don’t be shy- take a chance, dip your toe in the water, come and make new dance friends in a supportive community- you won’t regret it. It is never too late and you are never too old to embrace dance. And yes...you can do this!
