Meet the Coordinator:
Ruth Cameron discovered belly dance in 2005 during a hiatus from decades of competitive endurance sports when she was looking for a low impact fitness alternative. Her love of music and creative movement and the camaraderie offered by dance led to a longstanding commitment to practice and exploration of many types of bellydance.
She has trained in Middle Eastern and Oriental bellydance, tribal fusion, gothic fusion and most recently, Fat Chance Bellydance (Formerly American Tribal Style Bellydance) and its various dialects. Ruth now focusses her dance studies exclusively on the FCBD (fusion) style that originated along the west coast of the USA.
With a passion for dance props - from zills and veils, to tambourine, baskets, swords and more, Ruth has a particular love of sword work, specifically the "FCBD Sacred Sword" dialect. She continues to study regularly with internationally renowned bellydance sword dance teachers from across the USA, Europe and Asia. Additionally, Ruth’s background as a former student of classical guitar has fueled her love for Flamenco style music and for the past several years she has been an avid student of the “Siren” dialect (Spanish fan and manton), studying with teachers based in Europe.
Whether performing at local or interprovincial events as a soloist or with a partner or a group, designing authentic dance costumes, writing choreography, or coaching dancers, Ruth continues to enjoy all that bellydance has to offer.
