Fusion bellydance /"Transnational dance", is a largely improvisational dance style, inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East, North Africa, Spain, and India. It celebrates the strength and beauty of diversity and dancing together in a group. It is suitable for all genders and can also be danced as a solo performer.
The FCBD®Style (ATS®) / (Fat Chance Bellydance) style that serves as the foundation for the dance moves, is a low-impact dance style incorporating slow and fast movements. Each movement is well defined, and has a cue to allow followers to easily anticipate what is coming next. There is a dance leader, who interprets the music and selects moves for others to follow. Other dancers are positioned behind the leader in a formation and follow from this position. The leader rotates throughout a dance, so that everyone has an opportunity to assume this role, if they desire.
FCBD®Style (ATS®) is truly a global/transnational dance that invites participants to share in the feeling of being a part of something bigger. It affords the opportunity to experience parts of the world one might never otherwise have been exposed to. It’s a beautiful reminder that every time we dance, we are weaving together stories, traditions, and connections across cultures. Whether dancing to World, Spanish, Balkan, Indian, Nordic, Celtic, Latin, alternative, classical, modern, or other music, there is something for everyone!
If you are 18+ and are seeking a non-competitive dance experience in a supportive environment, this may be what you are looking for. All body types are welcome and the dance is LGBTQ2+ friendly. We'd love to hear from you and welcome you to come and dance with us!
PREPARING FOR DANCE CLASS
What Should I bring?
· Notebook and pen
· Water bottle
· Hip (triangle) scarf (optional). (We don’t wear coin belts/coin hip scarves in this dance style.)
· If your class involves props, bring your prop (zills, tambourine, basket etc. as these will not be provided). If you will be using a sword, the sword MUST be in a sheath that fully conceals it. Sword dance will require a head band/scarf if you will be doing head balance.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing (stretchy yoga wear is often preferred- top and leggings). It is not necessary to show your midriff/belly, although some moves just look better when they can be seen.
While you can go barefoot, many dancers prefer to wear footwear for hygiene and safety. If you wear footwear, it must be non-marking. A good option, is a neoprene or canvas dance slipper with a leather/suede split-sole. These are available at most dance wear retailers.
If you have long hair, a hair tie that allows you to pull your hair off your neck.
Can I bring a friend/visitor to watch? Can I take photos/videos in class?
You must check beforehand with the instructor to ensure that everyone’s privacy is respected. Don’t assume that others will be OK with this.
What if I have to miss class?
Contact the instructor by e-mail or post on the class Facebook page so that we know you are OK. There are no refunds for missed classes.
Other Class Rules
· Cell phones must be off during class to avoid disturbing your fellow dancers and teacher
· If you are sick, stay home. REALLY. Some people have low immunity and might easily catch your bug. Be considerate.
· Please don’t bring children to class if you don’t have a babysitter. It can be disruptive and it is not fair to your fellow dancers.
